|
Brief Biography-Guido Reni was born near Bologna in c. 1575 and was a disciple of Denis Calvaert from Antwerp at ten years of age alongside Domenichino and Albani. When he was nineteen, he entered the atelier of Carracci and studied frescoes under Ferrantini. While working in Rome with Carracci, Reni came under the influence of Raphael and Caravaggio. He painted principally in Rome and his hometown throughout his life but visited other cities, including Naples, where competitors aggressively drove him away. Rumours had it Caravaggio threatened to kill him. In his later works, he developed his style of neutral colours and away from dark contrast. However, his last years became plagued with debts due to gambling, resulting in some hurried work. Paintings by Reni hang in galleries throughout Europe. |
