Brief Biography-Ilya Efimovich Repin was from Chuguev in Ukraine. He was known as one of the leading Russian artists of his time. Ivan Kramskoiand the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions, the group of realist artists, influenced him; one other artist was Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky. His first major recognised work was Barge Haulers on the Volga. After that, he travelled to Italy and France and settled in Moscow, where he became renowned for his portraiture. The author Leo Tolstoy highly praised his work. His last years were in Finland, where he died in 1930. |
