Brief Biography-Constantin Daniel Rosenthal was born in Pest in 1820, the son of a Jewish family. At seventeen, he went to Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1842 Rosenthal moved to Bucharest and supported himself by painting portraits, and there became interested in the Romanian nationalists. Two years later, in Paris, he associated with student activists. Then, after a brief visit to England, Rosenthal returned to Bucharest via Budapest and kept in touch with the revolutionaries, receiving numerous commissions during his stay. Finally, when the revolution was over, he went to Paris, where he painted Revolutionary Romania, his most famous painting. Eventually, on his return to Bucharest, he was arrested, tortured, and executed for his association with the activists. He was only thirty-one years old. |
