Hans-Johann Rottenhammer

1564-1625 Germany/Mannerism

Brief Biography-Hans-Johann Rottenhammer from Munich travelled to Italy, where he spent time in Venice and Rome. In Rome, he collaborated with the Bamboccianti group of Northern painters. He supplied staffage for landscapes painted by Jan Brueghel, the Elder and Paul Bril. Adam Elsheimer assisted Rottenhammer with some of his works in Rome. He had a degree of influence from the paintings of Italian masters Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto.
Rottenhammer returned to Germany, where he worked in Munich and Augsburg, finally settling. Unfortunately, he died a poor man suffering from alcoholism. One of his most noted works is Feast of the Gods, commissioned by Emperor Rudolph II.
