Janis Rozentāls

Brief Biography-Janis Rozentāls was born in the Courland Governorate of Russia, now part of Latvia. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Art before returning to his hometown Saldus for two years. In 1901 he settled in Riga, where he married a Finnish singer and had three children. They lived in Helsinki for the remainder of his life, which ended in 1916 due to illness. His works ranged from portraiture to landscapes and graphic art. He is known as one of the most prominent Latvian artists. |
