Julio Ruelas

1870-1907 Mexico/Symbolism

Brief Biography-Julio Ruelas, engraver and draughtsman, was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and lived in Mexico City from age six. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes before going to Germany and studied under the artist Meyerbeer. At the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, he also visited the Netherlands. It is evident in some of his paintings that the works of Arnold Bocklin influenced him. Back in Mexico, he illustrated for the then-renowned Modern Magazine. He died at a young age in Paris in 1907.
