Brief Biography-Paul Sandby was born in Nottingham in 1725. At sixteen, he went to London and trained for two years as a draughtsman with his brother Thomas at the Tower. Thomas was also a draughtsman and painter. Following the rising in 1745, the Duke of Cumberland sent Paul to the Scottish Highlands to assist with an ordnance survey of the western country. While surveying the landscapes, he made numerous sketches, of which he did etchings that were published. Sandby later sketched at Windsor, where Thomas was Deputy Ranger. He and Thomas were founding members of the Royal Academy in 1765, and Paul became a chief drawing master at the Woolwich Military Academy in 1768. He began painting watercolours of the scenery around Wales in 1770; many of his works were in aquatint. Sandby died in London in 1809. |
