Karel Škréta

1610-1674 Czech Republic/Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Karel Škréta was born in Prague in 1610. Aegidius Sadeler possibly tutored him. However, being a protestant, he fled to Saxony with his mother in 1628. From 1629 to 1634, he lived in Venice and visited Florence. From there, he went to Rome for two years, joining the Bentvueghels taking the name Slagzwaart. He was successful as a portraitist and settled back in Prague in 1638, where he also undertook altarpiece commissions. He died in Prague in 1674.
