Brief Biography-Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael (Uytewael) was born in Utrecht in 1566. Wtewael was a very successful flax trader, enabling him to study in Italy and France for four years. He painted in the Haarlem Mannerist style and was a contemporary of Abraham Bloemaert, also born in 1566, with whom he was a co-founder of the Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke. Many of his works are on view in Utrecht. His most famous work, Perseus and Andromeda, hangs in the Louvre. |
