Brief Biography-Charles-André van Loo, commonly known as Carle van Loo, was born in Nice. He was the most successful painter and sculptor of the Van Loo family. His uncle, Jean Baptiste, instructed him and sent him to Rome to study under Benedetto Luti and Carle Learned sculptor under Pierre Le Gros. He departed Rome in 1719, when Pierre Le Gros died, and made his way to Turin and Paris. Then, in 1727, Carle returned to Rome, receiving a knighthood from the Pope, and gained first prize at the Academy of Saint Luke for design. After his return to Paris in 1734, Carle van Loo became a Knight of the Order of Saint Michael, court painter to the king, and by 1763, was Director of the Academy. Unfortunately, he died of apoplexy in 1765. |
