Jacob van Oost the Elder

1603-1671 Belgium/Baroque

Brief Biography-Jacob van Oost the Elder, portraitist and religious painter, was born in Bruges in 1603. He visited Italy to study masters such as Carracci and Caravaggio, who greatly influenced his religious works, and the sway of Van Dyck is evident in his portraits. From 1929 onward, he held important posts in the Guild of Saint Luke in Bruges, and his son, Jacob the Younger, whom he tutored, also became a successful painter. Many of his works are in the city’s churches. Jacob was also a musician.
