Brief Biography-Maria van Oosterwijck was from South Holland near Delft, where she began her work. She was the daughter of a clergyman who had her trained at an early age by Jan Davidszoon de Heem. De Heem instructed her in the art of floral painting, in which she excelled. She remained single throughout her life but reportedly had a relationship with Willem van Aelst. Among her many European royal patrons was William II of England. Wallerant Vaillant painted her portrait. |
