|
Brief Biography-Luis de Vargas, born in Seville, was a historical painter. He moved to Rome at an early age, where he became a disciple of Pierino del Vaga as he was a disciple of Raphael. When Vargas returned to Seville after twenty-eight years in Italy, his first painting was a Nativity, completed in 1555. It won him much acclaim; it is still at the Seville Cathedral. He established a high reputation amongst Spanish artists, and he went on to embellish the Cathedral and churches of Seville with numerous performances, his Calvary being his most outstanding. Criminals heading for their execution were permitted to stop before his cross painting, The Street of Bitterness, to serve their devotions. He died in Seville in 1568. |
