Brief Biography-Raja Ravi Varma was born in Kilimanoor Palace, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. in 1848. Varma blended Indian and European art styles in his works. He was born of noble blood and Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal, the ruler of Travancore, was his patron. Varma studied under the royal painter Rama Swamy Naidu and the Danish artist Theodore Jensen. He found success in India as a portraitist of nobility. Varma also painted Historical and mythological subjects, and he reproduced many of his paintings using lithography, which made them very popular, and they remain so to this day. |
