Brief Biography-Egide Charles Gustave, Baron Wappers, known as Gustave Wappers, was from Antwerp, where he studied at the Royal Academy. He subsequently studied in France, and on his return to Belgium, his work became recognised as the main inspiration for the Romantic Movement. His subjects were primarily historical. He was known to have worked with Jan August Hendrik Leys.
He became Director of the Antwerp Academy and was an officer of France’s National Order of the Legion of Honour. He was appointed as a painter to King Leopold of Belgium and gained the title of Baron. He spent his last years in Paris, where he undertook commissions for King Louis Philippe in Versailles. |
