Jan Baptist Weenix

1621-c. 1660 Netherlands/Baroque

Brief Biography-Jan Baptist Weenix was born in Amsterdam in 1621. His first drawing master was Jan Micker, followed by Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht, and he spent time in Rome with his cousin Nicolaes Berchemwho influenced his Italianate landscapes. As a member of the Bentvueghels, he became known as Ratel from the sound of his voice and found favour with Pope Innocent X, who commissioned his works. The Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke admitted him in 1649. Weenix primarily painted still life in his later years, and he passed his skills on to his son Jan Weenix, who also became a successful painter.
