Brief Biography-Franz Xaver Winterhalter was born in Menzenschwand, Saint Blasien, in the Black Forest, in 1806. He studied engraving in Freiburg and portraiture in Munich under Joseph Karl Stieler. In Karlsruhe, Winterhalter became Court Painter in 1834 and moved to Paris after a trip to Italy, establishing a reputation as a renowned portraitist at Louis Philippe’s Court. He went back to Karlsruhe in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, and in 1841, Queen Victoria engaged him to do the first of many portraits of her and her family. In addition, Winterhalter painted for several European royalties and dignitaries. He died in Frankfurt in 1873. |
