Lorenzo de Soto

1634-1688 Spain/Baroque

Brief Biography-Lorenzo de Soto was born in Madrid, where he became a disciple of Benito Manuel Agüero, whose style he continued to emulate. He was a painter of landscapes primarily containing religious subjects. However, with the government’s efforts to tax artists, Soto gave up painting, went to Yecla in Murcia, and became a collector of royal rents, painting landscapes in his spare time. Finally, he returned to Madrid after fifty years. But Soto could not recover the recognition once achieved before, so he was reduced to exhibiting his paintings publicly for sale, with little success. Soto died disillusioned in 1688. His remains are in the church of San Justo, in the vault of his family’s chapel of San Joaquín.
