Brief Biography-WorthingtonWhittredge from Cincinnati, Ohio, went to Paris in 1849 for formal instruction but decided his circumstances were more suited to The Academy in Düsseldorf. He studied with Emanuel Leutze, the German American history painter and stayed in Düsseldorf for seven years before going to Rome via a short stay in Switzerland. While in Europe, he became associated with Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford, both artists of the Hudson River School. They all excelled in landscape painting. Whittredge moved to New York in 1859, where he set up a studio and was a National Academy of Design member. He spent the last twenty years of his life painting in Summit, New Jersey, where he died in 1910 |
